Following a busy offseason on the recruiting circuit, Owatonna incoming senior lineman, Grant Lower, verbally committed to Division II Bemidji State University earlier this week, making his announcement via Twitter on Tuesday.
After logging the majority of his playing time with the B-Squad and taking the field sporadically for the varsity as a sophomore in 2021, Lower reshaped his physical frame last offseason — dropping from 285 pounds to 270 pounds — and didn’t miss a single game as a full-time two-way starter last fall.
With suddenly an abundance of readily-available game film to evaluate, Lower’s name quickly began circulating amongst regional college scouts and his stock was further amplified after a strong wrestling season in which he finished undefeated in Big Nine Conference as a heavyweight wrestler this past winter.
Lower was invited to a number of notable college exposure camps and recruiting clinics throughout the region and first visited BSU roughly two weeks after the final day of school, returning home on June 11 and announcing that he’d received an official offer from the Beavers’ staff.
Lower’s didn’t rack up head-turning statistical production last season (14 total tackles, 11 solo), but that isn’t unusual for an individual playing a position within Owatonna’s specific scheme where his primary duties are to soak-up blockers and cause havoc in the middle of the three-man front. With the extra freedom to roam at the second level thanks in part to Lower’s ability to do just that, two OHS linebackers (Drew Kretlow and Mitch Seykora) garnered the all-district accolades last season and a third led the team with 5.5 sacks (Torrin Smith).
The bulk of Lower’s highlight tape online comes from the offensive side of the ball where he started every game at right tackle, suggesting that might be where he ultimately lands at the next level. That, however, has yet to be determined.
It should also be noted that Lower gave Bemidji State his verbal commitment, which is considered a non-binding agreement by the NCAA. Until he officially signs his National Letter of Intent, his recruitment technically will remains open.
Bemidji State is a member of an ultra-competition Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and are coming off a 10-3 season in which they reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Bemidji State also posted a 10-3 record in 2021 and has registered at least eight wins every year since 2015 when the Beavers went 7-4.
Other NSIC programs to express interest in Lower include Winona State and Minnesota State.
