JON WEISBROD

Regular content on The Husky Bulletin will be anchored by in-depth, narrative-style feature articles, each piece being shaped in a manner that highlights the unique stories of the individuals who have contributed to the rich history of Owatonna sports. All articles will be written by former award-winning local journalist, Jon Weisbrod.

I started writing professionally in 2005 when I joined the sports desk at the Winona Daily News while attending college at Saint Mary’s University. Originally, I thought I’d either work in the Sports Information Department at a major university or become a full-time broadcaster, but after graduating with my Bachelors Degree in Communications in 2006, my career path pivoted and the rest, as they say, is history.

Though I stepped away from journalism on a full-time basis in late-2020, I remained active and dialed-in to the local sports scene. After jump-starting The Husky Bulletin in December of 2020 as an independent, grassroots content platform, I eventually shifted all content to OwatonnaLive as part of an exclusive page called The Sports Buzz by Jon. Around the same time, I also joined the company as a play-by-play broadcaster for a variety of prep sports.

In May of 2023 The Husky Bulletin entered into an official partnership with KFOW, The FAN Owatonna sports radio station and is the all-new HOME OF THE HUSKIES.

In the summer leading of 2021, I was hired by the Owatonna football program and given the opportunity to work directly with the team as an “in-house” content specialist and beat reporter. This tailored, hybrid position allowed me to indulge my passion for OHS football and contribute directly to the program in a unique way. I not only produced a stream of regular written content, such as weekly previews, game notes, profiles, features and game stories, but launched an independent podcast that ran for two seasons, aptly named The Owatonna Football Podcast.

Prior to that, I spent the better part of 15 years covering sports professionally and made various stops at daily publications throughout the Upper Midwest. Though the bulk of my work has centered around prep sports, I’ve had the opportunity to cover both NCAA Division I and Division II men’s college basketball national championships, roamed the sidelines for numerous college football games and taken part in the unique media scrums inside both NFL and NBA locker rooms. I’ve been up close and interacted with generational stars such as LeBron James, Brett Favre and Adam Thielen, but truly take pride in the work I’ve done highlighting the accomplishments of a younger generation…

…and that’s why The Husky Bulletin exists.
