It all started with three guys relaxing around a cell phone with a cold beverage in hand talking about the greatest sport known to mankind – golf. Just a few weeks later, united with new microphones and a mixing board, The Mulligan Hour podcast has officially hit the ground sprinting.
Host Chris Knutson coupled with co-hosts Tony “Buttercrust” Fadden and Matt “The Guns” Hughes have uncovered a supplementary facet to actually being on the golf course and playing – bantering about it over the airways.
News just in, folks – they are darn good at it. Regardless of their varying abilities on the links, Knutson, Fadden and Hughes possess an uncanny camaraderie that you would expect from a trio that has been together forever. They have only been at this since May!
The Mulligan Hour podcast boasts itself as an opportunity to unplug and forget about the everyday stressors that we all face. Be it a tough boss or tough luck on the financial front, The Mulligan Hour hopes that golfers of varying skill levels can unite around this amazing sport of golf. They can be found on PodBean and Spotify, while also housing a prominent presence on Facebook and YouTube.
“The Mulligan Hour is a chance to talk amongst other guys about golf and shanks and provides an awesome escape for me,” Knutson said. “A lot of guys that I have met along the way have different stressors in their everyday lives that they are dealing with. Our hope is that this provides something to look forward to and provides us with the ability to help others.”
The Mulligan Hour, which debuted just over a month ago, provides just what it has set out to do. I had the opportunity to join the usual trifecta a week ago for the eighth rendition of their podcast – and it provides a nearly euphoric escape from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. After an hour, I found it unfathomable that we had gone from serious themes to hilarious twists (mostly at Fadden’s expense in good fun) in merely a blink of an eye.
In tandem with The Mulligan Hour podcast is the opportunity to play in live tournaments as well. TMH’s tournament is on Sunday at the site of their official sponsor (Legacy Golf in Faribault). The hype has exploded since the tournament draft party in mid-June. The draft, hosted at Inside Swing Golf in Owatonna (also a sponsor), featured ten team captains drafting 30 players in an NFL-esque format. Each of the 30 available players on the board had submitted not only handicaps but also a player profile in an effort to entice team captains to choose them as part of their foursome.
The ten-team scramble on Sunday will officially tee off in the mid-morning hours. However, prior to the round, Hughes promised a solid breakfast spread to participating golfers compliments of his Blackstone. “We will essentially be tailgating prior to teeing off,” Knutson voiced. “We will have a ruckus of high-fiving and walk-up songs on the first tee.”
This highly anticipated atmosphere reminded me of what you may expect to find when huddled around the first tee of a Ryder Cup – except on steroids. Buckle up fellow golfers – this is going to be a ball.
The Mulligan Hour podcasters have already started to drum up plans for their next outing and draft party as well. Knutson foresees the next draft process for that larger tourney to be one with a salary-cap type feel. Each team captain will be allotted a specific sum of money to purchase a team of four within the parameters of their budget.
A bigger field is anticipated for their next outing. The hype is real, folks. Find your way to PodBean or Spotify to check out The Mulligan Hour – and catch up on the eight loaded episodes waiting for you. I promise that you will not be disappointed.
Until next month, hit ‘em long and straight – and most of all have fun!
