Most Minnesota golfers are accustomed to taking a hiatus from the game they love during the frigid months we know so fondly as Winter.
However, the recent past has shown us Minnesotans that playing all year round is not only feasible — it’s practical and affordable.
In November of 2023, the foursome of Shawn Sundine, Jesse Sletten, James Harsma and Blake Krueger opened Inside Swing, an Owatonna indoor golf business. Prior to opening their facility in the building that once housed the likes of Torey’s Restaurant and Bar, Sletten shared that simulator golf was also a hobby prior to it becoming a business.
“We played every Monday night on the simulator in my garage in 2020,” Sletten said. “We then started experimenting with a bunch of technology and equipment from Iowa and Wisconsin before opening our own.”
Inside Swing offers four simulator bays – open not only to the public throughout the week but also to a variety of different leagues. Three different leagues have formed, all with varying formats ranging from handicap based to best ball (Men’s, Co-Ed and Float).

According to Sletten, March has proven to be a busy time at Inside Swing.
“By March, most people have cabin fever,” Sletten said. “They have made it through the holidays, want to do something and this offers them the chance to get their swing rolling. We also offer a Master’s Tournament coming up with the format being a 2-person scramble. Winners receive Green Jackets with the Master’s Logo and our logo and have their name engraved on the plaque on the wall.”
In April of 2024, Owatonna also experienced the good fortune of a simulator opening on North Cedar Avenue. The Clubhouse – Owatonna Indoor Golf, owned by Owatonna native Matt Olson, unveiled its 2-bay facility after putting in countless hours to get his operation to where he wanted it.
The Clubhouse offers the public a yearly membership fee of $100 (or monthly membership of $25) coupled with a $25/hour bay rental. After becoming a member, Olson trains newcomers on how to utilize the simulator equipment prior to their first tee time.
“When you book a simulator bay, a key code will generate and be sent to you approximately 5 minutes prior to your reservation that allows you access to the facility,” Olson said. We offer tee times 24/7 and our membership is up over 100 now.” Olson shared that his target audience has predominantly been a golfer playing at the simulator once weekly or families introducing their kids to the game.
There are countless benefits to golf in the simulator setting. Being able to play all year – regardless of polar vortex weather conditions – is a game changer for the Owatonna golfing community. Regardless of age or ability, simulator golf allows participants the chance to work on their game – or simply enjoy it as another entertainment option. I love the idea of playing in the comfort of consistent conditions like that of the former Metrodome. Now, if only our shots could be replicated as steadily as our surroundings.
Until next month, hit ‘em long and straight – and most of all have fun!
